For this bog post I was asked to write about the scariest thing I have ever done. The scariest thing that I have ever done I probably snipe hunting with my scout troop, also known as our initiative. First I will tell you what happened before the major part. Second I will tell you the rest of what happened. Finally I will tell you what happened at the end.
Snipe hunting is basically catching these rabbit like animals that are kind of like they are on steroids, as everyone in my troop describes them, and they have glowing red eyes. Almost all the organizations at my church go snipe hunting on campouts. First we waited for dark. Then we brought down duck tape because there is something in duck tape that keeps the snipes from hurting you. We went down a nature trail up at the boy scout campgrounds up in Koke'e an they tied Kenyon and I, another person my age who hasn't gone snipe hunting yet, to a tree using the duck tape and they went down the trail a little more to scare the snipes up the hill towards us.
Now for the start of the terror. They then start screaming in pain (the manly way, more like loud grunts) and saying they were scratched or bit and they could not get back up the hill. One persn even stepped on one of the eggs of the snipes. Some could make it up, others could not. The ones who have done it before started to take us back up to the camp, there was a catch though, we could not use flashlights. The lights made the snipes angry so we had to make it up the overgrown nature trail without light. We finally made it up and then the experienced snipe hunters went down to get the other people who were lost. they slowly started coming up with the others, some making it back up on their own. Knowing that anytime the snipes could jump on you from the trees,, claw you on the legs, bite your legs, or even drag you away is a very freaky thing to know.
Now for the part that made the hunt all worth it, for the others at least. We all sat around our fire and the older kids said, " It's all a prank.". I then laughed at myself and how scared I was. We then started to talk about fault that we noticed that would have given it away if we knew it was a prank.
Most people would think we would get mad and want revenge on them, but we had fun thinking back on what happened and we knew that they all went through our initiative too. We all would look back to our first time snipe hunting and have a laugh about ourselves. I was so freaked out during the hunt. I can't wait until I am on the other side of the prank.
I am in 8th grade in my school's Advanced Media class. I love this class and I have been having lots of fun in it. This past year we went to San Diego, where STN was held, and the year before it was in Orlando. This year it was in Atlanta, Georgia.
