Well, being the last week of the quarter, our projects are due. Like always, the due day was a little frantic for everyone. Every one was running around, rushing to finish their project, and just being annoyed at the internet for being slow. I was able to get a good version completed that I feel pretty confident in. I ended up getting a few more pictures from my mom sent in on Thursday because at my little brother's Christmas show, the Aloha Angels showed up with another donation to the school and my mom was able to take a picture. I just watched it again and I realized that I forgot to remove some slugs from the sides of some pictures I took. Well, I think that I turned out pretty well overall and I got it turned in on time so I think I will get a good grade. Well, I will have it below, so enjoy!
In one of our class periods, we were asked to think if we wanted to stop doing these blogs and start doing video blogs, or vlogs. I would prefer not to for various reasons. I will tell you a few here, and an alternative to get the pros of the vlogs.
To me, the main reason that I don't think we should do it is because I don't really like recording myself like that. I am fine with the stand-ups because that is a recited line that is said from a distance from the camera for a few seconds. The vlogs would be a lot of my face, and I am not very comfortable with that, I don't even like to do short acting shots.
Another reason is because I don't really have something easy to take the video with. My family has a 70D, but that does not have an even decent microphone like a smartphone does. We have an iPad also, but it is only like the iPad 2 so it has a horrible camera. With not very good quality of the easy things of making a video, I like to post it on my blog even less. I think that some other people would have the same problem.
One alternative I have come up with is that every once and a while, instead of doing two blogs for the week, we would have a given topic like "The Forest" and with that topic we would make a short video 30 second of the forest out of pictures and videos we take that week, it could be interpreted any way, maybe you would go inside of a bush and make a short skit about being in a huge forest. That way, we would still have the filming and editing practice every once and a while, but we wouldn't have a face on it, unless we want to. The weeks for the video instead of a blog could be chosen at random or set weeks. This idea could be changed many ways and it would not really be any more open to trolls than the quarterly projects we already do.
Well, now you know what I think about replacing the blogs with vlogs. Well, see you later.
With less than a week until the quarter is over, our 2nd quarter news stories are due shortly. I am almost halfway through the editing process and I am a little bit behind. I have put in almost half of my interviews and will be done with the rest shortly. I am a little bit behind what I was hoping. I still need to shoot a little bit more b-roll that I have put into my script. I also still need to record my voice-overs and stand-up. I will do those next class. I should have a rough draft by Wednesday, and have finished revisions by Thursday when I will be able to turn it in. I think that I will be able to get what I need done in time to get my video turned in on time and with good quality. I should be okay with this project, and once I am done I am already going to start working on my PSA for next quarter. Well, bye for now!
The new version of my script that I will be editing off of.
The Olelo Youth Exchange is a competition for mostly PSA's with a category for news stories also. They have a variety of different competition categories, but here I will tell you which one I am thinking of doing.
I plan to participate in the Forest Health category. I am planning to make a simple video that has a huge impact. The message would be, "Reverse the Impact, Don't Increase It". It will be a simple seeming video that will really take a lot of effort to complete.
I am thinking of starting it off with a bunch of shots of nice, healthy forests with a variety of shots. After about 8 seconds it would switch to a bunch of invasive species flocking the forest grounds. After you get a chance to see what the invasive species have done, someone will start to clean it up, for example there could a a shot of a group of ginger and then during the shot someone comes over and digs it up. From there I will have shots of more people cleaning up the forest. Then it will rewind back to a healthy forest and the message will fade on.
I will also briefly describe my backup idea. It would fall under the Creating Peace category. There will be a cyber bully on a computer about to send a hurtful message to a victim. Right when he is about to push the send button, a bunch of windows will just pop up that state "Don't bully" and similar messages. The bully just closes the laptop and walks away in a way that tells you that he gets the message.
Well, those are my ideas on what to do for my 3rd quarter PSA that I will hopefully be submitting to the Olelo Youth Exchange. Come back soon for some more. Bye!
With Christmas coming up, I decided to watch one of my favorite holiday movies, The Santa Clause. For those of you who don't know what it is, it's about a man named Scott Calvin finding Santa on his roof, but he doesn't believe in Santa, so he yells up to him and scares him. Santa gets startled and slips off the roof, falling onto the ground. Scott then pulls out a card that Santa had for an ID and on the back of it it says, "If something should happen to me, put my the suit. The reindeer will know what to do". They find Santa's slay, his son gets up in it and Scott grabs the suit and goes up, he says let's go, but they reindeer take off, bringing them to the next house. His son convinces him to put on the suit and put the presents under the tree. He does and they keep on doing it because of the reindeer. Finally the reindeer take him to the North Pole, where from there on he starts to become Santa physically and mentally. The story goes from one christmas to the next, and is interesting. They use a lot of different shots, when Santa falls off the roof, they have his perspective of what sliding down the roof looks like. They do all kinds of shots like that, it's a great movie. I like it and if you get a chance to, you should watch it too. Well, going to go watch the second one! Bye!
Tomorrow is our second STN practice and I hope everyone is able to do a better job than the first. I know that we need to improve quite a bit. I think it would be best if we improve on our story the most. I think we also need to focus on our interviews. Finally, I think that we need to work on our b-roll shots.
We, like one of our practices last year, completely missed the best story, but we had hinted at it so you could know the story existed. We decided to have the story on the man being grateful to be on Kauai when the true story was that he was grateful for his daughter being pregnant after trying going through a lot of work. We let him say that, but only in one audio clip in the entire video.
We also were having trouble getting the right answers out of our interviewee. It could have been him not understanding the questions and the goal, or we could have been asking the wrong questions for the right answers. I am going to try to think of better questions to get better interviews.
We also did not get too great of b-roll shots, but that is why we focused on him being grateful for being on Kauai, because we could get good b-roll for it, it turned out to backfire on us. Now that I really think of it, we could have gotten enough b-roll to fill up the story if we did do it on his daughter. We also did not have good quality of b-roll, we did not really have any sequences. I am going to try to shoot better b-roll and sequences.
Overall, I plan to do much better on this next practice and bring it up an lot in quality. Well, I will tell you the results soon. Bye!
I am in 8th grade in my school's Advanced Media class. I love this class and I have been having lots of fun in it. This past year we went to San Diego, where STN was held, and the year before it was in Orlando. This year it was in Atlanta, Georgia.
